A small perching bird with a grey head, black-and-white patterned wings and a warm orange-buff breast turns on a diagonal branch, its closed tail black and washed with rust-orange, the same rust marking its wing edge and flank. Ink-wash foliage in soft grey tones frames the scene: a cluster of pale yellow multi-petaled blossoms hangs at the upper left, and loose, five-petaled white flowers with dark grey leaves branch off at the lower right. Small petals drift as pale outlined circles across the cream ground.
Watanabe Seitei (1851–1918) was a Japanese kachō-ga painter trained under Kikuchi Yōsai. In 1878 he travelled to Paris, remaining roughly three years and becoming one of the first Nihonga painters to study in Europe, and he exhibited at the 1878 Paris International Exposition. He is known for the bird-and-flower woodblock albums Seitei Kachō Gafu (1890–91 and 1916), which paired Japanese design conventions with closely observed, Western-influenced naturalism. His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
