In Hiroshige’s inset a long red bridge crosses a wide river, a sailboat and a poled boat on the water and a castle rising among trees on the far shore. Below, two travellers walk hand in hand along the bank: in front, a figure in a brown robe patterned with bamboo and yellow flowers wears a sword and a yellow sash; behind, a woman in a white hood and a deep blue kimono patterned with white blossoms trails a long red tasselled cord from her sash.
The Fifty-three Stations by Two Brushes (1854–57) paired the two most popular print artists of late Edo: Utagawa Hiroshige (1797–1858), the landscape master of the Tōkaidō road, and Utagawa Kunisada (1786–1865), the leading designer of actor and figure prints. Each sheet sets a Kunisada figure — an actor, a beauty, a legendary character — before a Hiroshige view of the station behind. The series is held by the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
