Tsukioka Yoshitoshi — Kaidai hyakusensō: Shigeno Daisuke | Japanese Woodblock Print (Ukiyo-e)

A warrior in a deep blue-purple robe marked with a crest of six square-holed coins raises one hand to shield his eyes as he looks upward and to the side. His other hand grips the green-wrapped hilt of a sword held at his hip. He stands before a studded red-brown gate beside a pale text panel bearing crests in gold, blue and green ink. A title cartouche in red and yellow sits at the upper right; the signature appears in a vertical panel at the right, above a red flower-shaped seal.

Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839–1892) was the last major master of ukiyo-e, working through the upheaval of the Meiji era. A pupil of Kuniyoshi, he moved from violent early war prints to the psychological intensity of his mature series — One Hundred Aspects of the Moon (1885–92) and New Forms of Thirty-Six Ghosts — in which history, legend and theatre are staged by moonlight. His draughtsmanship and unusual use of colour carried the woodblock print into the modern period. His prints are held by the British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
