Below, a dark indigo river patterned with fine white wave-lines curves through a green grassy bank, where clusters of white and small orange chrysanthemums grow among dark green leaves. Tsukioka Kōgyo (1869–1927) devoted almost his whole career to a single subject: the Noh theatre. A pupil and later adopted relation of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, he trained in both ukiyo-e and Japanese-style painting, then spent three decades designing print series — above all Nōgaku zue (Pictures of Noh, 1897–1902) and the later Nōgaku hyakuban — that record the plays as staged. His figures float on plain grey or lavender grounds, the costume patterns printed with great delicacy, so that the mask and the robe carry the drama. His prints are held by the Rijksmuseum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago.
