A cluster of double-flowered aquilegia rises at centre, its deep violet-purple, ruffled petals opening around a white starburst of stamens, with a furled bud still closed above. A spray of pale pink pendant double blooms, bright yellow stamens at their hearts, leans in from the left on slender maroon stems, and green palmate leaves fill the lower half of the sheet. The ground is a plain cream.
Tanigami Kōnan (1879–1928) was a Japanese artist known for a set of botanical print albums of Western garden flowers, published in Kyoto in about 1917. Kōnan is the artist’s gō (art name), used with the family name Tanigami; the National Diet Library catalogues him as Tanigami Kōnan, 1879–1928, a dating also carried by the Library of Congress authority file and Wikidata. The albums render tulips, irises, amaryllis and other Western flowers in traditional Japanese woodblock technique. His work is catalogued by the National Diet Library of Japan.
