A tall, symmetrical composition in warm tan and ochre fills the sheet: a large circle at the top holds a small red triangle and a pale blue rectangle, opening onto tiers of pointed and rounded Gothic arches bound by heavy black lines. Pale blue rectangles mark the upper corners, and small patches of dull gold sit lower in the design. The whole is a cartoon for a stained-glass window.
Richard Roland Holst (1868–1938) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and designer who believed art should serve the community. Trained at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, which he directed from 1926 to 1934, he followed William Morris in seeking purity and clear form. A socialist, he made woodcuts, lithographs, posters and book designs in a modified Symbolist style, many for the writings of his wife, the poet Henriette Roland Holst, and painted murals for the Beurs van Berlage and the Diamond Workers‘ Union building. His work is held by the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
