Reijer Stolk — Anatomical Study | Woodcut Print

A headless, faceless torso bends forward, rendered as pure muscle fibre in bold black lines against bare paper. One arm reaches down to a clenched fist, the other curls up and over the shoulder. A bent leg is tucked beneath the body, its foot cropped at the edge of the sheet. The blank oval left for the head reads as a stark void amid the dense hatching.

Reijer Stolk (1896–1945) was a Dutch printmaker, painter, sculptor and inventor whose unusual page layouts drew much comment. Born in Java, he studied at the Kunstnijverheidsschool in Haarlem under Chris Lebeau and Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, alongside M. C. Escher, and later taught in Haarlem and Amsterdam. He is best known for the 1918 edition of Nescio’s Dichtertje, De uitvreter, Titaantjes and for his Anatomische studies in houtsneden, and painted murals for the liner Nieuw Amsterdam and Enschede town hall. His prints are held by the Rijksmuseum and the Drents Museum.
