Paul Signac (1863–1935) was a French Neo-Impressionist painter who, with Georges Seurat, developed pointillism, applying pure colour in small, separate dots that blend in the viewer’s eye. Largely self-taught, he met Seurat in 1884 and co-founded the Société des Artistes Indépendants that year. After Seurat’s death he settled at Saint-Tropez and turned increasingly to watercolour, painting the harbours and sailing craft of Mediterranean ports in loose, luminous washes. His work is held by the Musée d’Orsay, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art.
