A bird with a black face, crown and throat set against a golden-tan body and back perches on a bare branch, its folded wing barred in black and white, a long tapering pale bill, and yellow legs gripping the wood as it bends down to look at a flower below. The flower is a single white blossom with numerous narrow, strap-shaped petals radiating from a dark, cone-like centre, drawn in outline with pale grey shading, beside a few pale buds still closed on the twig. A vertical inscription is lettered at the upper right.
Numata Kashū (1838–1901) was a Japanese painter of kachō-e, bird-and-flower subjects, working in the late Edo and Meiji periods. He compiled Shūchō Gafu (Album of Assembled Birds), a woodblock album of bird and flower plates published in three volumes by Kinkadō in Tokyo in 1885, each plate naming its bird and plant in a small cartouche. The album is catalogued by the National Diet Library of Japan, which also holds the authority record for his name.
