Numata Kashū — Asian Paradise Flycatcher and White Magnolia | Japanese Bird & Flower Woodblock Print

A bird with an iridescent green head and back, a blue cheek patch and rust-orange markings at the shoulder bends forward on a branch, its extraordinarily long tail sweeping up and across the sheet in barred bands of blue-grey and cream. Below, a full white magnolia blossom opens to show a cluster of yellow stamens at its centre, with several furled, downy grey-brown buds further along the branch, and a second white magnolia opens at the top of the sheet above the bird.

Numata Kashū (1838–1901) was a Japanese painter of kachō-e, bird-and-flower subjects, working in the late Edo and Meiji periods. He compiled Shūchō Gafu (Album of Assembled Birds), a woodblock album of bird and flower plates published in three volumes by Kinkadō in Tokyo in 1885, each plate naming its bird and plant in a small cartouche. The album is catalogued by the National Diet Library of Japan, which also holds the authority record for his name.
