Long, slender silvery-green and brown leaves radiate from the base of an air plant growing on a tree branch, with a cluster of shorter yellow-green inner leaves at the centre. Signed and dated ‚M.V.W. 5.26.1921‘ at the lower left. This bromeliad, native to Florida and the Caribbean, is painted in Walcott’s precise botanical watercolour style.

Mary Vaux Walcott (1860–1940) was an American botanical watercolourist. Born to a Quaker family in Philadelphia, she began painting wildflowers on the annual expeditions to the Canadian Rockies that also made her a pioneering mountaineer and glaciologist. Her precise, luminous studies were published by the Smithsonian in 1925 as the five-volume North American Wild Flowers, some 400 plates that earned her the name the Audubon of botany. Her watercolours are held by the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
