Pink tulips rise above a cluster of anemones in red, orange, white and violet, each with a dark centre, gathered in a blue-and-white striped ceramic vase. Behind them a textured green wall breaks into loose vertical strokes, and the vase stands on a golden-ochre tabletop built from short diagonal strokes. The artist signs ‚L. Valtat‘ in block letters at the lower right. Painted in 1931.
Louis Valtat (1869–1952) was a colourist who anticipated Fauvism. Trained in Paris under Gustave Moreau’s circle, he was painting in pure, unmixed colour on the Mediterranean coast by the mid-1890s, before Matisse and Derain, and exhibited alongside them at the 1905 Salon d’Automne. Red rocks at Agay, gardens, flower pieces and beach scenes were his subjects for half a century. His paintings are held by the Musée d’Orsay, the Hermitage and the Musée de l’Annonciade in Saint-Tropez.
