Three pine trees with pale grey-lavender trunks rise against a hillside of dense orange-red foliage and a pale blue sky streaked with white cloud. Green shrubs and patches of bare golden-ochre ground spread across the foreground, with small red accents scattered among them. The paint is applied in broad, energetic strokes of pure colour. A signature appears at the lower right of the canvas.
Louis Valtat (1869–1952) was a colourist who anticipated Fauvism. Trained in Paris under Gustave Moreau’s circle, he was painting in pure, unmixed colour on the Mediterranean coast by the mid-1890s, before Matisse and Derain, and exhibited alongside them at the 1905 Salon d’Automne. Red rocks at Agay, gardens, flower pieces and beach scenes were his subjects for half a century. His paintings are held by the Musée d’Orsay, the Hermitage and the Musée de l’Annonciade in Saint-Tropez.
