Three black open umbrellas seem to walk on their own across a bright orange-yellow ground, their carriers reduced to a pair of brown trouser legs and shoes beneath the two nearer canopies. Thin diagonal rain lines streak the background, and bold black-and-red lettering across the top names Parapluie-Revel. A blank rectangle bordered in red sits at the lower right.
Leonetto Cappiello (1875–1942) reinvented the advertising poster. Arriving in Paris from Livorno in 1898 as a caricaturist, he replaced the descriptive Belle Époque bill with a single arresting figure on a flat black or coloured ground — the Cinzano zebra, the Maurin le Quina devil, the Cachou Lajaunie dancer — designed to be read in an instant from a passing tram. He produced more than a thousand posters. His work is held by the Musée des Arts Décoratifs and the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
