Pink and white rose petals cascade from an opening in a coffered ceiling onto a marble terrace, burying reclining figures below in drifts of bloom. On the upper terrace, banqueters in patterned robes recline at a table set with fruit and silver vessels, while a woman in flowing dress plays a double flute beside a smoking bronze brazier. Marble columns, a leopard-skin drape and a distant blue mountain range frame the scene, with a bronze statue on the balustrade.
Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836–1912) was a Dutch-born painter who settled permanently in England after 1870. He trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp under Gustaf Wappers and worked as an assistant to the history painter Baron Hendrik Leys before turning to the ancient Roman and Egyptian subjects for which he became known. His paintings set languid, finely dressed figures against meticulously researched marble interiors and Mediterranean views, prized in his lifetime for their archaeological detail and later criticized, then reassessed, for the same polished exactness. His paintings are held by Tate, the Walters Art Museum and Manchester Art Gallery.
