Two owls stand one behind the other against a solid black field, their round eyes and feathered brows echoing each other almost exactly. Only the foremost bird’s mottled body and clawed feet show beneath the stacked faces. A double-ruled outline frames the black panel, and the block carries a monogram and the date 1921 at the lower right, cream ink against black throughout.
Julie de Graag (1877–1924) was a Dutch printmaker and watercolourist who trained from 1890 at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) in The Hague, studying under Johannes Josephus Aarts and later under the critic and collector H. P. Bremmer. She worked mainly in woodcut, producing sharply contrasted, decorative prints of animals, plants and village scenes in a style bridging Art Nouveau and the geometry of De Stijl. Her prints are held by the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Kröller-Müller Museum and the Centraal Museum Utrecht, among other Dutch public collections.
