A cat lies curled into a tight round shape, head tucked toward its folded paws with eyes closed in sleep. Its pale body is left in reserve against a dense black ground of fine horizontal hatching, with a narrow striped border below suggesting a mat or sill. The word ‚December‘ is lettered beneath the image, with the monogram A.J.D.G. and the date 1917 cut into the lower corners.
Julie de Graag (1877–1924) was a Dutch printmaker and watercolourist who trained from 1890 at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) in The Hague, studying under Johannes Josephus Aarts and later under the critic and collector H. P. Bremmer. She worked mainly in woodcut, producing sharply contrasted, decorative prints of animals, plants and village scenes in a style bridging Art Nouveau and the geometry of De Stijl. Her prints are held by the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, the Kröller-Müller Museum and the Centraal Museum Utrecht, among other Dutch public collections.
