A single tern drops head-down to the left across an unbroken turquoise ground. Its wings are raised and angled back and two very long white tail streamers rise above them. The cap is glossy black, the breast and belly carry a faint rose flush, the back is pale grey and the outer wing feathers are edged dark. The open bill is rose-red at the base, shading through orange to black at the tip, and two scarlet feet are tucked under the body. Hand-coloured engraving after Audubon’s watercolour.
John James Audubon (1785–1851) was a French-American ornithologist and artist who set out to depict every bird species of North America at life size. His watercolours were translated into The Birds of America (1827–1838), 435 hand-coloured aquatint plates including the Great Blue Heron and the Carolina Parakeet, engraved primarily by Robert Havell Jr. — recorded in the Library of Congress/Wikidata authority data as the work’s principal engraver — and coloured by a team of more than fifty colourists. The original watercolours are held by the New-York Historical Society, and complete sets of the prints are held by the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia and the Natural History Museum, London.
