Joaquín Sorolla — Bouquet of White Roses (Bodegón de rosas blancas) | Fine Art Print

A loose mass of white roses, one of them flushed with red at the right, rises out of a squat earthenware jar glazed in ochre and green, dark leaves worked in among the blooms. The background is close to black at the right and warm olive-brown at the left, and a broad grey ledge runs across the lower half. A white cloth spreads across the lower right corner, carrying a handwritten dedication and the artist’s signature.

Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was the painter of Spanish sunlight. From the 1890s he worked on the beaches of Valencia, painting bathers, fishermen, sails and children in the surf with a broad, rapid touch that caught the glare of the Mediterranean, and his exhibitions in Paris, London and New York made him one of the most celebrated painters of his day. His last great work was the Vision of Spain for the Hispanic Society of America. His paintings are held by the Museo Sorolla in Madrid, the Prado and the Hispanic Society.
