Jan Toorop (1858–1928) was a central figure in Dutch art between Van Gogh and Mondrian. Born in Java and trained in Amsterdam and Brussels, where he joined the avant-garde group Les XX, he moved through Impressionism and Pointillism to a Symbolist style of rhythmic lines drawing partly on Javanese motifs, and his 1894 poster for Delftsche Slaolie gave Dutch Art Nouveau its nickname, the slaoliestijl. After converting to Catholicism in 1905 he made religious works, posters, book designs and stained glass. His work is held by the Rijksmuseum, the Kröller-Müller Museum and the Kunstmuseum Den Haag.
