The square is laid in horizontal bands of small painted curls like fleece — cream darkening through grey-brown to near black, a crisp edge into cream again, then a second darkening to black. A circular emblem straddles the divide, fine red-brown lines radiating from a small red hub with rows of dots following arcs across them in red, orange, yellow, blue, teal and mauve. Tiny pale marks are scattered over the fleece, with a small blue hexagon at the right.
Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) was a Swedish painter who arrived at abstraction years before Kandinsky, Malevich or Mondrian. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and working professionally as a botanical and landscape painter, she began in 1906 the vast cycle she called The Paintings for the Temple — swans, altarpieces, spirals and the ten great sheets of The Ten Largest — guided by her involvement with theosophy and the spiritualist group known as The Five. Convinced the work would not be understood in her lifetime, she left instructions that it not be exhibited until twenty years after her death. Her paintings are held by the Hilma af Klint Foundation and Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
