Henri-Edmond Cross (1856–1910) was, with Signac, the artist who turned Neo-Impressionism towards pure colour. Born Henri-Edmond Delacroix in Douai, he moved to the Mediterranean coast in 1891 for his health and spent the rest of his life at Le Lavandou, painting pines, beaches and bathers in broad mosaic touches of violet, orange and green. His late canvases, freed from Seurat’s small dot, were studied closely by Matisse and Derain in the summer that produced Fauvism. His work is held by the Musée d’Orsay, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Van Gogh Museum.
