George Bellows (1882–1925) was an American painter of the Ashcan School. Born in Columbus, Ohio, he studied under Robert Henri in New York and became known for vigorous, dramatically lit scenes of the city’s underside, above all the boxing paintings Stag at Sharkey’s and Both Members of This Club, both 1909, alongside crowded urban views such as Cliff Dwellers (1913). His work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
