Félix Vallotton (1865–1925) was a Swiss-born painter and printmaker, naturalised as a French citizen in 1900. Trained in Paris at the Académie Julian, he joined the Nabis in 1892, though his cool, detached manner earned him the nickname the Foreign Nabi. He made his name with stark black-and-white woodcuts of domestic and street life, notably the series Intimités, and went on to paint nudes, portraits and landscapes in flat, hard-edged colour. His work is held by the Musée d’Orsay, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art.
