Gold hoop earrings show beneath the veil, and her gaze meets the viewer directly. The artist signed and dated the canvas 1873.
Charles Landelle (1821–1908) was a French academic painter best known for his Orientalist figures. A pupil of Delaroche and Scheffer, he exhibited at the Salon from 1841 and travelled in Egypt, Morocco and the Levant from the 1860s; his Fellah Woman, shown in 1866, was reproduced so widely that he painted versions of it for decades. He worked in a smooth, carefully finished manner aimed at a large public. His work is held by French national and regional collections, including the Musée d’Orsay.
