Seen from behind, a figure sits cross-legged on a deep red carpet worked in combed diagonal strokes. The broad cream plane of the back is turned to the viewer, the head tipped so that only a sliver of pink cheek shows beside a heavy dark knot of hair. The wall behind is brushed blue and crossed by a band of dark red. Cushions crowd the foreground: a deep blue one, one striped with red saw-teeth, an olive one carrying a single red curl.
August Macke (1887–1914) was a German Expressionist painter associated with Der Blaue Reiter. Born in Meschede and trained at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, he grew close to Franz Marc in 1910 and, through him, to Wassily Kandinsky, painting the colour and light of café terraces, gardens and city crowds. A journey to Tunisia with Paul Klee and Louis Moilliet in April 1914 produced the luminous watercolours of his final months, before he was killed in action in Champagne that September, aged twenty-seven. His work is held by the August Macke Haus in Bonn, the Lenbachhaus in Munich and the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal.
