A young woman sits square to us, hands folded in her lap, her neck drawn long and her face narrowed to an oval. Her eyes are flat almond shapes of blue-green with no pupils. She wears a dark high-collared jacket over a pale collar and a long black skirt that spreads to the edge of the canvas. Behind her, panels of brick red, burnt orange and olive stand for a wall and a doorframe. The painter’s name is brushed in black at the upper right.
Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) was an Italian painter and sculptor who worked in Paris from 1906 until his death at thirty-five. He is known for portraits and reclining nudes rendered in elongated, mask-like forms, drawing on African and Cycladic sculpture as much as on Cézanne. A Nu couché (Reclining Nude, 1917) is now in the Museum of Modern Art, and a Female Nude (c. 1916) is held by the Courtauld Gallery in London. His portraits of Jeanne Hébuterne, his companion in his last years, are held in several collections, including a 1918 example at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
