A face reduced to a few soft-edged planes of colour rises the height of the canvas: a peach cheek and jaw meet a pale wedge of white and mauve at the brow, divided by fine dark outlines. Small dots of green, orange, purple and white sit at eye level on both sides, and a dark horizontal band forms the mouth near the base. The palette stays soft throughout – blush pink, tan, pale blue and lilac – with thin yellow lines marking the contours.

Alexej von Jawlensky (1864–1941) was a Russian-born painter central to German Expressionism. A career army officer, he studied painting in St Petersburg from 1889 while still in service, gaining admission to the circle of Ilya Repin, and in 1896 he settled in Munich, where he worked alongside Marianne von Werefkin and in 1909 co-founded the Neue Künstlervereinigung München with Wassily Kandinsky. In Wiesbaden after the First World War he reduced the human face to broad, glowing planes of colour in his Mystical Heads and Saviour’s Faces, and in his last years to the small Meditations, painted as arthritis stiffened his hands. His work is held by the Museum Wiesbaden, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Norton Simon Museum.
