A woman’s head and upper shoulders are drawn in a few bold black ink lines on plain paper. Long wavy hair falls past the shoulders in loose parallel strokes. Large almond-shaped solid black eyes, a single curved line for the nose, and full dark lips define the face. A small monogram is inked at the lower left.
Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch painter and one of the leading figures of Dutch modernism. He trained under his father, an art school director, and his uncle, and in Paris took up in turn Cubism, Futurism and Expressionism before settling into a bright, faceted Post-Impressionist manner. His landscapes, still lifes and nudes are built from broken planes of strong colour; a 1929 studio fire destroyed much of his output, so surviving canvases are relatively scarce. His paintings are held by the Kröller-Müller Museum, the Frans Hals Museum and the Kunstmuseum Den Haag.
